The symptoms of acne
The symptoms of acne are caused by spots forming in the glands of the skin that produce protective oils, known as sebum.
The areas where the acne spots usually occur are the face, shoulders, and upper back.
Blackheads
Acne may result in spots which are known as "blackheads" or "comedones"; and small spots which are white in colour, known as "whiteheads".
These blackheads and whiteheads may become infected by bacteria, which makes the spot inflamed and results in a larger raised spot, a spot filled with pus or a hardened lump.
Larger spots may leave scars.
This video from the National Health Service explains the symptoms of acne.
Greasy skin
Pinky, itchy skin is also a common problem and many people, whilst suffering an over production of sebum, have a greasy patina to their skin before and during an acne break-out.
