Prevention is better than a cure for acne

There's no proof that acne is linked to diet but to prevent acne it is sensible to eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water.

Acne prevention: wash regularly but not too often

Wash regularly but not more than twice a day and possibly using one of the antiseptic washes. (Washing too frequently and irritate your skin, lead to increased sebum production and therefore worse acne).

Avoid covering yourself with thick layers of make up and certainly do not leave it on overnight.

Apply any medicinal creams you use regularly and to the whole of the affected area.

Acne prevention: don't be impatient

It's vital, if you are on prescribed medication, to take it according to the instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist.

Always take the full course as many medications can take a couple of months to work. Don't expect results overnight, have patience and complete your course of medicine.

Acne prevention: no sunbathing

The sun can be bad for acne so don't overdo the sunbathing and, if you are likely to be out in the sun for any reason, use a non-comedogenic sun protection cream.

Acne prevention: don't squeeze your spots

Squeezing is so tempting but it's a bad ideas as this can cause the area to become more inflamed and therefore more likely to scar. It can also spread the acne-causing bacteria around your face and make things worse.
