Coping with the psychological effects of acne
Acne is a scourge and there's no doubt that a prolonged bout of acne break-outs can have a negative psychological effect on a sufferer.
Some people with mild, moderate or severe acne say they feel self-conscious and want to lock themselves away from the world, citing that they are afraid to be seen by friends or even family.
Acne can also lead to self-image problems and severe clinical depression.
The impact of acne
The psychological impact of acne is huge because acne affects young people just as they are starting to develop their personalities.
It is a period of life when teenagers view peer group approval as vital and it's a time when physical attractiveness is considered all important.
These are some of the problems that acne patients may suffe, particularly those with severe acne:
- Low self esteem and body image
- Social withdrawal and difficulties forming friendships and relationships
- Reluctance to attend school or work
Acne and depression
Spots and acne can be so distressing for patients that the condition may lead to clinical depression. It's vital that family, friends and the medical profession recognise and manage this.
Signs of depression include:
- Appetite loss
- Tiredness and lethargy
- Mood swings
- Behavioural problems
- Insomnia
- Frequent bouts of crying
- Feelings of unworthiness
Acne and suicide
Some young people have even tried to take their own lives as a result of the misery brought on by acne.
Long before it gets to this stage then certainly a sufferer should see their family doctor and embark on a programme of treatment.
If this initial treatment doesn't have the desired effects then insist on a referral to a dermatologist.
A study published by the British Medical Journal in November 2010 confirmed the link between acne and suicide. Of 5,700 patients suffering from severe acne, 128 were admitted to hospital after attempting suicide.
Don't suffer with spots
No-one should have to suffer with acne in this day and age and, today, the medical profession is extremely understanding about the psychological effect that acne can have on people, particularly young people who are at the most self-conscious period of their life.
So, if you have a problem, don't delay, go see a doctor today.
