The real causes of acne
Acne begins with puberty and is due to changes in hormone levels.
It seems that acne is usually a case of the skin over-reacting to hormone levels, rather than there being particularly high hormone levels in those people who get bad acne.
There is no current evidence that high hormone levels do cause a chronic and recurrent problem with acne.
The actual causes of acne
- Skin sebaceous glands produce too much oil.
- In the tubes that run to the surface of the skin from these glands, too many of the cells lining the ducts are produced.
- This leads to tiny plugs blocking the ducts.
- The glands continue to secrete oils, leading to swelling behind the plug.
- The blocked ducts become infected with bacteria, which leads to inflammation and the production of larger redder spots, sometimes filled with pus.

This is the root cause of acne.
It's not down to not washing properly; eating too much sugar, fat or junk foods; or sex and masturbation.
It's simply a hormonal problem.
There are factors which can exacerbate acne, though.
Undoubtedly, an unhealthy diet can lead to spots and pimples and heavy sweating (particularly when exercising or playing sports) can have an effect on your complexion.
